Finding the mold
To remove mold, you have to be able to find it. Anywhere that you find standing water, wet flooring or walls or evidence of old water damage could be a potential spot for mold growth. If you find this evidence, you should look everywhere you can for the presence of mold, which might appear as a black, green or otherwise discolored area on surfaces. Even if you don’t see mold, it could be growing out of sight, such as behind a wall, which makes it a good idea to have a professional do an inspection.
If mold is found
If you or a contractor finds mold, it must be cleaned up and removed as soon as possible. Many people try to clean up mold themselves, but they often don’t get all of it. That’s why it’s important to hire an expert to do the job. Contractors who specialize in mold removal use specially formulated cleaning solutions and also have special equipment that can detect mold that isn’t visible. Cleaning up the mold may not be enough however. If mold growth is extensive, you may have to remove carpet, drywall, furniture, mattresses or other items that have mold growth in them.
Consequences of mold
Mold can cause health problems for people who are allergic to it, including skin irritation and respiratory problems. Certain types of mold also can destroy building materials. That’s why it is so important to have a mold expert remove the mold in your home.
